Suheir Hammad

From the first Def Poetry season, aired on TV in 2002. With the Twin Tower attacks still fresh in the New York audience’s minds, Suheir gives her take on what life is like after the attacks. – Especially what it’s like for her and her family. A middle-eastern family in Brooklyn whose son serves in the Navy while America is about to go to war with Afghanistan and Iraq.

Pretty powerful stuff.

Also, Suheir’s starred in the brilliant movie “The Salt of this Sea”, which I highly recommend.

Steve Coleman – I want to hear a poem…

From Def Poetry Season 1.

Just pure niceness. He’d make a great rapper, too.
