BP swaps Tony Hayward for Robert Dudley

In the latest Daily Show, Jon takes another well-placed and hullarious stab into the heart of the filthy beast they call BP.

Reporter’s voice: “Outgoing CEO Tony Hayward is set to receive a year’s salary and then a healthy pension worth millions. BP claims it is not a golden parachute.”

Jon Stewart: “No, of course, not a golden parachute… –  It’s just golden. Only cos BP has decided parachutes are a costly and unnecessary safety apparatus…”

And on the fact that the utterly failing Tony Hayward is being transferred to his new job for BP in Russia, while Bob Dudley leaves his post in Russia to take over American operations for BP:

Jon Stewart: “What is BP, it’s like a game of musical chairs where the music never stops, and even if it did, there’s always two really nice chairs.”

“Britain’s best days still lie ahead,”…

… says David Cameron.

John Oliver begs to differ in the Daily Show’s last installment of “Clustershag to 10 Downing”.  (click for video)

“Do you really think that Cameron thinks Britain’s best days still lie ahead?? He was being sarcastic, John. This is the same Britain which once ruled two thirds of the globe! We used to import Indian footmen to polish the cobblestones, so our beggars wouldn’t get their knees dirty…”

Awesome bit.

Ah, hell, you best watch the whole show, cos right after this bit, Lewis Black is coming for Glenn Beck, in a bad way…

The end of gaiety in New Jersey

New Jersey state senators dumped the bill asking for gay marriage to be allowed in the Garden of Eden State. What’s striking, and Wyatt Cenac nails this in his report for the Daily Show, is the complete lack of a historical perspective on the debate. Black people, hasidic Jews and more minorities were up in arms about the prospect of people having the freedom to marry who they want.

Here’s where my quote of the week comes in. (Click picture to watch.)

“It was just as our forefathers had envisioned. That one day, people who had been discriminated against for their religion or their color of their skin could come together to discriminate against people for their sexual orientation — without the slightest sense of irony.” (Wyatt Cenac)

Anyway, what’s with every reactionary ignoramus always trying to piggyback the founding fathers? At the time, they were amongst the most modern and visionary of their time, actually putting into law the ideals of the French Revolution which, even in France, was quickly compromised. (Okay, let’s leave slavery and the slaughtering of Indians out of this for half a second…)

Good News…

First of all, thedailyshow.com now offers full episode streaming in a pretty reasonably-sized screen. (Until now, only bits and skits were available, in a much smaller screen and often introduced by some commercial.) So now I can forget about the “International edition” (weekly digest shows) on CNN.

Second, this episode here is again proof that Jon and his team still have it. The whole first half of it is instant classic. From the news of a new record on the terrorist watchlist to the New Yorker cartoon depicting Barack Obama and his wife as muslim militants. Hilarious.

(In the last bit, Pierce Brosnan comes in to plug “Mamma Mia”, which you needn’t necessarily watch. Who wants to see Pierce singing??)
