How can so much be so wrong in one short heading?
a) Anybody who’s ever tasted Bud knows there is nothing to save or preserve in the first place. I’d take yesterday’s dishwater over Bud any day…
b) It’s not like Anheuser-Busch’s a little local microbrewery that’s about to lose it’s originality and unique formula… So if you’re gonna sell your horse-piss beer brewery to the world’s biggest beer-maker (InBev), and if it’s gonna be national stereotypes deciding over this, you could do a lot worse than sell it to Belgians. They do happen to make some of the best beers in the world. WITH real flavour and everything! It can only get better, really.
c) Some of the people campaigning against the takeover seem to be so caught up in their patriotic zealotry, they disregard some simple facts. It does say in the article the new North American headquarters would be run from St. Louis, which is the home of Anheuser-Busch. So much for losing jobs? And InBev with their famous Stella and Becks, Leffe, Labatt, and a whole bunch more, would most likely help boost sales, while continuing to pretend it’s the same American brand as before. Where’s the problem? (Actually, Anheuser-Busch already imports and distributes some of InBev’s brands.)
d) Who loses tears or sleep over one giant being gobbled up by the biggest of them all? In the long run, people are gonna get fed up with dull, mass-marketed average-tasting mediocrity and the niche products of local brewers are gonna gradually expand their share of the market. Life’s too short to drink stale beer.
This post is also inspired by Carlsberg, home of Feldschlösschen which, in turn, owns like 90% of the Swiss beverage market. Up yours, too, and cheers!
